You’ve worked hard to establish a top-level training program to use with your staff. But, how do you know if your program is working? Measuring your training program’s effectiveness is key to knowing whether your trainees are actually learning to retain the information. It can also help you make adjustments to your training. The steps to evaluating the effectiveness of your training program are fairly straightforward. First, you’ll want to identify exactly what it is that you need to be trained on -- identify objectives. What are the goals for this training? What should people learn?
Next, you’ll administer the program. This tends to include several assessments before, during, and after training sessions. After that, you’ll want to use metrics to measure the success of your program and ask for learner feedback. The first thing you want to look at is the number of employees that are successfully completing your training. If they aren’t finishing training at an acceptable rate, you may consider incentivizing learners to participate or looking into a deeper reason for why they aren’t doing so.
Get learners’ feedback on your training. If they don’t feel like it was worthwhile or helpful, it may be a reason why they aren’t finishing. Learners are much more likely to remember information when they’ve enjoyed the training, too.
Learners’ pass/fail rates concerning your training’s assessments will be important for understanding how effective your training is. If they consistently fail assessments, it may mean that the training isn’t engaging enough, and you might want to consider adjusting it.
The best way to know if your training is working is to observe learners’ behaviors once they’ve completed training. If they begin doing the things they learned in their training, this signals a successful program.
Similar to observing a behavior change, you want to measure whether employees begin incorporating the knowledge taken from their training into their work. If they start speaking or thinking in ways that demonstrate the target knowledge, it points to success.
